If you have a painful shoulder, you’re not alone. Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems and can make everyday activities—like dressing, driving, or even sleeping—uncomfortable.
The good news is that most causes of shoulder pain can be diagnosed accurately and treated effectively.
A quick look at shoulder anatomy
To understand shoulder pain, it helps to know a little about how the shoulder is put together.
Your shoulder is a complex joint made up of:

A ball-and-socket joint that allows a wide range of movement
The rotator cuff muscles and tendons (four key muscles that stabilise the shoulder)
The long head of the biceps tendon
Ligaments that support the joint
The joint capsule
The subacromial bursa (a small fluid-filled sac that reduces friction)
Because so many structures work together in a small space, even minor inflammation can cause significant pain.
What could be causing your shoulder pain?
There are several common reasons why your shoulder may hurt, including:
Subacromial bursitis
Rotator cuff tendinopathy
Calcific tendonitis
Frozen shoulder
Arthritis (either in the main shoulder joint or the acromioclavicular joint)
Each of these conditions has slightly different causes and treatments, which is why getting the right diagnosis is so important.
In this blog series, we’ll break down each condition—what it is, how it’s diagnosed, and the most effective treatment options available.
